It's the 1970's, and Don Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is growing old and tired. As part of his strategy to finally seperate himself from his criminal past, he works with Cardinal Lamberto (Raf Vallone) and financial advisor B. J. Harrison (George Hamilton) to strike a deal to move much of his great wealth to the Vatican bank. But as his daughter Mary (Sophia Coppola) strikes up a romance with up-and-coming family member Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia), his past comes back violently as he finds himself in conflict with young capo Joey Zasa (Joe Mantegna) and equally aging Don Altobello (Eli Wallach).
