Jake Geismer (George Clooney) is an American war correspondent who once managed a news bureau in Berlin. He is back in town on assignment to cover the 1945 Potsdam Conference where the leaders of the Allied governments are deciding Germany’s fate and carving her up as spoils of war. While in Berlin his driver is Corporal Tully (Tobey Maguire), an open-faced Midwesterner. Jake is not interested in the fact that the angelic seeming Tully is in reality a corrupt black market fence working every angle to make a fortune. But Jake is surprised by Tully’s girlfriend because she is Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett) a girl that Jake once loved and thought he knew. Tully shows up dead with a fortune in his pockets and a bullet in his back but the authorities don’t seem to want to investigate the crime. Jake digs into the mystery only to discover that the answer to every question seems to be Lena.
